THAT'S EASTER: Death to Life. A short film about Easter and historical reliability of the Bible's account of the events around the death and resurrection of Jesus from St Helen's Church Bishopsgate, London.

It is finished!

The Good News of Easter is that Jesus Christ, perfectly God and perfectly man in one person, died on a cross in our place, paying the penalty for our sins; three days later He rose to conquer sin and death and give salvation to all who believe in Him alone for eternal life. His resurrection was witnessed by many people, even 500+ on one occasion - see 1 Corinthians 15:1-11!

However people tend to pursue a relationship with God in either one of two ways. The first is by being religious, spiritual, moral and the second is by believing the good news of Jesus Christ. The two are like oil and water in every way - they just won't mix!

Religion says that if we obey God He will love us. The gospel says that it is because God has loved us through Jesus that we can obey.

Religion says that the world is filled with good and bad people. The gospel says that the world is filled with bad people who are either repentant and forgiven or unrepentant and unforgiven.

Religion says that you should trust in what you do as a good moral person. The gospel says that you should trust in the perfectly sinless life of Jesus laid down for us at the cross because he alone is the only truly good and moral person who will ever live.

Religion leads to an uncertainty about my future before God because I never know if I have done enough to please him and avoid judgement. The gospel leads to a hope and confidence about my future before God because Jesus declared on the cross, "It is finished!" - his work in paying the price of sin and bringing salvation is complete.

Religion leads to pride (because I think I am better than other people) or despair (because I continually find I don't measure up to God's commands). The gospel ends in humble and confident joy since through the cross of Jesus, I am loved, forgiven and free to live for him, not because of what I have done, but because of his love and mercy freely given.

The difference between religion and the gospel is two letters - the difference between DO and DONE. Do I think the way to acceptance with God is based on what I must DO, or on what Jesus has DONE for me at the cross?
